Geofoam Grade-Raising Fill Above Underground Parking Structure

Site Conditions

  • The project required construction of a high fill over an underground parking structure.
  • The backfill was intended to function as a roadway embankment.
  • If conventional compacted soil fill had been used, the resulting additional loads would have caused stability problems in the structural system of the parking structure.

Designed Solution

  • Construction of a 3 m high raised slab above the parking structure using a permanent formwork system, followed by construction of the remaining fill up to the project elevations using geofoam block technology.
  • Implementation of a hybrid solution combining two different construction technologies.

Advantages of the Applied Geotechnology

  • The roadway fill could be constructed without causing stability problems in the structural system of the underground parking structure.
  • The project was completed within a substantially shorter construction period compared with conventional construction methods.
