Site Conditions

  • The subsurface conditions consisted of soft soils.
  • Without ground improvement, a conventional compacted soil fill would have resulted in stability problems under the design loads.
  • Mobilization of heavy equipment required for conventional ground improvement methods was difficult due to site constraints.

Designed Solution

  • Construction of the stepped fill using geofoam block technology.
  • Design of a retaining structure at the elevation transitions to resist the lateral earth pressures acting on the geofoam staircase system.
  • Preparation of geofoam block layout plans in accordance with the hillside fill configuration.
