Site Conditions
- The subsurface conditions consisted of soft soils.
- Without ground improvement, a conventional compacted soil fill would have resulted in stability problems under the design loads.
- Mobilization of heavy equipment required for conventional ground improvement methods was difficult due to site constraints.
Designed Solution
- Construction of the stepped fill using geofoam block technology.
- Design of a retaining structure at the elevation transitions to resist the lateral earth pressures acting on the geofoam staircase system.
- Preparation of geofoam block layout plans in accordance with the hillside fill configuration.
Advantages of the Applied Geotechnology
- The stepped fill could be constructed without causing stability problems in the foundation soil.
- The project was completed within a substantially shorter construction period compared with conventional construction methods.
