Site Conditions
- The subsurface profile consisted of uncontrolled fill material.
- A road embankment was planned to be constructed over the uncontrolled fill.
- Without ground improvement, a conventional compacted soil embankment would have created stability problems within the uncontrolled fill under the design loads.
- The construction area was located between viaduct foundations, resulting in restricted access and difficult mobilization of heavy construction equipment.
- Conventional ground improvement methods were disadvantageous in terms of overall project cost, constructability and construction schedule.
- A 7 m high conventional fill would have imposed substantial lateral earth pressures on the existing basement wall of the parking structure.
Designed Solution
- Construction of the road embankment using geofoam block technology.
Advantages of the Applied Geotechnology
- The road embankment could be constructed without causing stability problems within the underlying uncontrolled fill.
- Lateral earth pressure acting on the basement wall was effectively eliminated.
- The project was completed within a substantially shorter construction period compared with conventional construction methods.
- The solution provided a more economical alternative in terms of total project cost compared with conventional ground improvement methods.
