Çam and Sakura City Hospital Parking Structure Wall Geofoam Backfill

Site Conditions

  • Three reinforced concrete structures serving as parking ramps were constructed at an elevated level supported by a precast-panel-faced, steel-strip-reinforced mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall system.
  • If the backfill behind the reinforced concrete structures had been constructed using conventional compacted soil fill, the resulting stress increases would have adversely affected the internal stability of the MSE wall.

Designed Solution

  • Construction of a 6 m wide geofoam block backfill in front of the reinforced concrete structural walls.
  • Construction of the fill behind the geofoam zone using lime-stabilized compacted soil.

Advantages of the Applied Geotechnology

  • The backfill could be constructed without causing internal stability problems in the MSE wall.
  • Lateral stresses acting on the reinforced concrete structural walls were reduced.
  • A hybrid solution combining two different geotechnical technologies was implemented.

Performance Under Service Loads

  • An instrumentation program using earth pressure cells was implemented to monitor lateral stresses acting on the reinforced concrete structural wall.
  • Stress measurements were collected and reported at intervals requested by the project contractor until completion of the hospital construction.
