Site Conditions
- The project required construction of a high fill over an underground parking structure.
- The backfill was intended to function as a roadway embankment.
- If conventional compacted soil fill had been used, the resulting additional loads would have caused stability problems in the structural system of the parking structure.
Designed Solution
- Construction of a 3 m high raised slab above the parking structure using a permanent formwork system, followed by construction of the remaining fill up to the project elevations using geofoam block technology.
- Implementation of a hybrid solution combining two different construction technologies.
Advantages of the Applied Geotechnology
- The roadway fill could be constructed without causing stability problems in the structural system of the underground parking structure.
- The project was completed within a substantially shorter construction period compared with conventional construction methods.
