McDonald’s Drive-Thru and Loading Area Geofoam Block Fill

Çeşme / Izmir

Site Conditions

  • Need for approximately 3.20 m high fill construction to create the drive-thru and loading areas of the McDonald’s restaurant.
  • A rapidly constructible fill solution was required to meet the targeted opening date of the project.
  • As the fill areas would be used for drive-thru and loading operations, an engineered solution capable of safely carrying passenger and commercial vehicle loads was required.
  • Due to passenger and commercial vehicle traffic over the fill area, a lightweight and high-performance fill solution was required.

Designed Solution

  • Construction of the drive-thru and loading area fills using Geofoam block lightweight fill technology.
  • Construction of two staircases, originally designed as reinforced concrete structures, using Geofoam blocks.
  • Safe transfer of vehicle loads through a load distribution platform and pavement layers constructed over the Geofoam blocks.

Advantages of the Applied Geotechnology

  • Due to the low unit weight of the Geofoam blocks, additional loads resulting from the fill were significantly reduced.
  • By using lightweight fill technology, the fill works were completed within a short construction period, enabling compliance with the targeted project opening schedule.
  • The approximately 3.20 m high fill was constructed safely and in a controlled manner to meet the operational requirements of the drive-thru and loading areas.
  • The staircases constructed using Geofoam blocks provided a fast, lightweight and durable solution.
