Technical Visit to the Başiskele Interchange Corridor Project by the Kocaeli Branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers

The Başiskele Interchange Corridor Project, which plays an important role in Kocaeli’s transportation infrastructure, was visited as part of a technical site tour organized by the Kocaeli Branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers (İMO). Technical presentations were delivered throughout the program to provide information on the ongoing works at the project site.

The technical visit was attended by Ali Akgün, President of the Kocaeli Branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers, together with branch members. As Geotech Soil and Foundation Engineering, we also took part in the visit with our technical team.

Project Scope and Technical Features

The project covers an approximately 16-kilometer transportation corridor along the D-130 Highway and includes the construction of 9 bridges, 7 culverts and 2 pedestrian overpasses. While ground improvement works are continuing, approximately 100,000 m³ of geofoam blocks are planned to be used to meet the lightweight fill requirements of the project.

During the site visit, bored pile applications, ground improvement methods and the expected contribution of the interchange corridor to urban transportation were discussed in detail.

Our Technical Presentation

As part of the technical visit, Dr. Emre Akınay delivered a presentation on behalf of our company, providing comprehensive information on the ground investigation studies carried out for the project, the design approach of geofoam lightweight fill geotechnology, construction processes and structural analysis principles.

The presentation highlighted the advantages of lightweight fill solutions in controlling loads transferred to the ground, limiting differential settlements and supporting long-term performance. It was also emphasized that the engineering methods adopted in the project contribute both to faster construction and to sustainable infrastructure performance.
