Works on the Başiskele Interchange Corridor Project, being implemented by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality along the D-130 Highway, are progressing in line with the planned schedule. Dr. Hayri Baraçlı, Secretary General of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, visited the project site, received an update from the technical team and emphasized the importance of both quality and construction speed.
The 16-kilometer transportation corridor includes 9 bridges, 7 culverts and 2 pedestrian overpasses and is intended to significantly improve traffic flow in the region. Approximately 300,000 m³ of excavation and fill works are being carried out as part of the project, while ground improvement works are continuing using the deep mixing method.

Innovative Fill Solution with Geofoam
Geofoam blocks, an innovative lightweight fill geotechnology, are being used in the southern side-road works of the corridor project. Approximately 100,000 m³ of geofoam fill is being incorporated into the project. Owing to its ultra-lightweight characteristics and controlled stress distribution, geofoam contributes to faster construction while also supporting reliable long-term performance.
The use of geofoam blocks provides significant benefits to the project by reducing loads transferred to the underlying ground, enabling controlled settlement behavior and contributing to both internal and external stability under service loads.
Extensive Technical Works
Major construction works carried out within the scope of the project include:
- 15,500 m of bored piles
- 26,000 m of deep mixing works
- 167,000 tonnes of plant-mix base and asphalt placement
- 30,000 m³ of concrete placement
- 5,500 tonnes of reinforcing steel
- 13,000 m of stormwater drainage lines
- 11,500 m of highway guardrail installation

Geotech’s Role in the Project
As part of the Başiskele Corridor Project, one of the largest highway interchange projects in the world to utilize geofoam block lightweight fill technology within its 54-year history of application, Geotech is involved in design, field implementation and supervision services.
Through geofoam lightweight fill geotechnology, we help accelerate the construction process in infrastructure projects while delivering engineering-based, durable and long-term solutions.
