Site Conditions
- Need for grade raising and fill construction to create a new internal access road within Beldeport Port.
- Maximizing the efficient use of available space within the port area was an important design criterion for the project.
- The road platform had to be safely constructed to accommodate heavy vehicle and equipment traffic within the port.
Designed Solution
- Construction of a lightweight geofoam block fill system over a multi-plate corrugated steel structure.
- Design and construction of a reinforced concrete load distribution platform over the geofoam block fill system.
- Construction of a flexible pavement system over the reinforced concrete platform.
Advantages of the Applied Geotechnology
- Due to the low unit weight of the geofoam blocks, the fill loads acting on the corrugated steel structure were significantly reduced.
- The space beneath the corrugated steel structure could be utilized for storage, providing additional usable space within the port area.
- A system with a shorter construction duration compared with alternative solutions was selected, contributing to the overall project schedule.
- The reinforced concrete load distribution platform designed over the geofoam blocks enabled loads generated by port traffic to be safely distributed and carried.
- The operational efficiency of the port area was improved by integrating transportation and storage functions within the same structural system.
