Jivala / Bucharest – Romania
Site Conditions
- The overpass bridge alignment crossed above a buried utility corridor at a water channel crossing.
- If the bridge approach embankment had been constructed using conventional compacted soil fill, the resulting stress increases could have created a risk of structural damage and service disruption in the components of the buried utility corridor.
Designed Solution
- Construction of the bridge approach embankment using geofoam block technology.
Advantages of the Applied Geotechnology
- The bridge approach embankment could be constructed without creating a risk of structural damage or service disruption in the buried utility corridor.
Performance Under Service Loads
- At the section where the geofoam bridge approach fill reaches its maximum height, an access shaft extending from the surface of the geofoam fill to the finished grade was constructed. The elevation of the geofoam block fill is regularly monitored through this observation station.
