Site Conditions

  • A roadway embankment up to approximately 4.5 m high was planned over an existing piled retaining structure, although this additional service load had not been considered in the original retaining structure design,
  • A reinforced concrete retaining wall had been constructed on the capping beam of the piled retaining structure to accommodate the roadway embankment,
  • The stress increases resulting from construction of the roadway embankment would adversely affect the stability of the existing retaining structure.

Designed Solution

  • Construction of the roadway embankment using geofoam block technology.

Advantages of the Applied Geotechnology

  • The roadway embankment could be constructed without causing stability problems in the existing piled retaining structure,
  • The block layout designed in accordance with the Zero Earth Pressure (ZEP) concept prevented the transfer of lateral earth pressure to the reinforced concrete retaining wall constructed on the capping beam.
