SITE CONDITIONS

  • Requirement for construction of a stepped fill to provide access to an existing geofoam block platform fill, reaching a height of 4.5 m, located above an already constructed piled retaining structure.
  • Risk that the additional stresses induced by the stepped fill could adversely affect the stability of the existing retaining structure.

DESIGNED SOLUTION

  • Design and construction of the stepped fill using geofoam block geotechnology.

ADVANTAGES OF THE APPLIED GEOTECHNOLOGY

  • Construction of the stepped fill without causing additional stability problems in the existing retaining structure.
  • Elimination of lateral load transfer to the retaining structure constructed above the capping beam through a block layout designed in accordance with the Zero Earth Pressure (ZEP) concept.
