Construction of Sound and Noise Barriers Using Geofoam Blocks

Highway and railway alignments may be located close to, or even within, residential and commercial areas. Traffic-related noise pollution can have adverse effects on people living in these areas. To mitigate noise pollution, noise barriers can be constructed along transportation corridors using geofoam blocks (Figure 1). These barriers can also be integrated into landscape design with an aesthetic approach, allowing them to function not only as noise-control elements but also as natural-looking boundaries between the roadway and adjacent developed areas.
